James, Duke of York

I just received an¬†tweet¬†condemning me for being a #&*k#%! Conservative. So I couldn’t help myself and ask if they knew what a Conservative¬†was, which received¬†a reply with a few more¬†colorful words¬†about how corrupt Conservatives were and they¬†were all a bunch of liars. A real intelligent conversation¬†by¬†an obvious¬†non Conservative. Since¬†144 characters is not enough space to convey my thoughts on “what is a Conservative’ I thought I would write a short blog and e- mail it to my colorful acquaintance and post for all other non-conservatives to view.

The name ‘TORY’ is probably from the Irish word¬†‘toraidhe’¬†meaning ‘outlaw’ or ‘highwayman’ and ‘t√≥ir¬†‚Äė meaning ‘pursue‚Äô¬†, likely referring to Irish peasants who were removed from their land by¬†English settlers¬†, leaving them no alternative¬†but to steal for a living. Historical Canadian conservatism arose from British Toryism which started when members of a British political party founded in 1689,¬†¬†who were¬†the opposition party to the Whigs,¬†were opposed to the¬†exclusion of James, Duke¬†of York from the royal succession (1679‚Äď80) ¬†and rallied to uphold¬†his¬†legitimate right.¬†The Exclusion Bill sought to exclude the king’s brother from the thrones because he was Roman Catholic. The¬†Tories (which was a¬†slanderous¬†nickname by the ‘Country Party’ referring to the Irish peasant robbers) were opposed to this exclusion while the “Country Party,” who were soon to be named the ‘Whigs’ (also an insult, ‘whiggamore,’ a cattle driver,¬†by the Tories and are now todays Liberal party), supported it because they saw the Catholic Church as a threat to liberty. The Tories¬†have been known as the Conservative Party since about 1832. It is interesting to note that¬†todays Liberal and Conservative parties both started out by calling each other insulting names, a tradition that continues today.

The Conservative Party of today is the political heir to a series of right-of-centre parties that have existed in Canada, beginning with the¬†‘Liberal-Conservative Party’¬†founded in 1854 by Sir John A. MacDonald¬†and Sir George-Etienne Cartier and then became the Conservative party in 1873. As a result of western alienation in 1920 the Progressive Party of Canada became the official opposition,¬†then in 1940 joined the Conservatives and renamed the party ‘The Progressive Conservative Party of Canada’. ¬†In 2003, the ‘Canadian Alliance’.(formerly the ‘Reform Party’ ) and ‘Progressive Conservative¬†Party’ agreed to merge into the present-day Conservative Party. It appears that even under PM Steven Harper,¬†todays ‘Conservatives’ are headed to catering to the eastern establishment. It amazes me that two western parties have started up , the ‘Progressive’ and the ‘Reform’, to give westerners a voice in government and both times when the parties reached power forgot about the west and catered to Ontario and Quebec. Nothing seems to¬†have changed for the western provinces.

Today, the Conservative Party¬†has a¬†‚ÄúHere for Canada‚ÄĚ plan that focuses on five key priorities:

  • Creating jobs¬†through training, trade and low taxes.
  • Supporting families¬†through our Family Tax Cut and more support for seniors and caregivers.
  • Eliminating the deficit¬†by 2014-2015 by controlling spending and cutting waste.
  • Making our streets safe¬†through new laws to protect children and the elderly.
  • Standing on guard for Canada¬†by investing in the development of Canada‚Äôs North, cracking down on human smuggling and strengthening the Canadian Armed Forces.

Canadians don’t need a Liberal/NDP Welfare State

Today, Kirk’s 10 principles of conservatism sum up what a Conservative is made up of..

  1. First, the conservative believes that there exists an enduring moral order.
  2. Second, the conservative adheres to custom, convention, and continuity.
  3. Third, conservatives believe in what may be called the principle of prescription.
  4. Fourth, conservatives are guided by their principle of prudence.
  5. Fifth, conservatives pay attention to the principle of variety.
  6. Sixth, conservatives are chastened by their principle of imperfectability.
  7. Seventh, conservatives are persuaded that freedom and property are closely linked.
  8. Eighth, conservatives uphold voluntary community, quite as they oppose involuntary collectivism.
  9. Ninth, the conservative perceives the need for prudent restraints upon power and upon human passions.
  10. Tenth, the thinking conservative understands that permanence and change must be recognized and reconciled in a vigorous society.

So, for me, todays Conservative party is the only party with a clear path for the future and an understanding of who they are. The NDP and the Liberals are made up of radicals that have yet to put forward any real policy, hoping to win¬†the 2015 election by¬†embroiling the government in made up scandals. Maybe their tactic will work in 2015. They tried the same tactic in the past election and It didn’t, leading to a Conservative majority.

For all you non Conservatives hope this short blurb answers your question ‘What Is A¬†Conservative’.
