1970’s Global Population Alarmism a Bust

populationToday, after 18 years of hearing how the global warming apocalypse is going to destroy the earth, another 1970 global alarmism alarm, “The Population Bomb” by Dr. Paul Ehrlich , has been discredited by the New York Times, after 45 years of promoting the scare, as being bogus. Ehrlich book mobilized governments all over the world to reduce the birth rates or be thrown into starvation and poverty within 10 to 15 years.

President Nixon, like Obama today on Climate change, proposed a wide attack on over population and preached the bleak realities of the population explosion. Celebrities like Jonny Carson had Dr. Ehrlich on his late night show 24 times telling million’s of viewers famine and conflicts were soon to come and the end is near. He went so far as to predict that 65 million Americans would starve to death. Walter Cronkite and other news media preached daily about the coming devastation. Even movies like “Soylent Green” and “In the Year 2025” were being made promoting the coming shock. Throughout the world, global population alarmism was under way. This was the global scare I was brought up with as a kid and young adult. Now after 45 years it’s being discredited like global warming will most likely be in years to come.

Unfortunately the devastation of this faulty science on families, and especially woman in under developed countries like India was horrendous. Even today in India, forced abortion and sterilization is still being carried out. It was even being considered that luxury taxes should be put on cribs and diapers. Forms of coercion were used just like in today’s global warming panic. Stewart Brand summed it up about Global alarmist when he said “How many years do you have to not have the world end to reach a conclusion that maybe it didn’t end because that reason was wrong?”

Today we see there was no breakdown, and humanity has been able to support and feed itself even with a doubling of the population. The UN said population is expected to keep growing to 8.4 billion by mid-2030, and 9.6 billion by mid-2050. But Sanjeev Sanyal an Indian economist and others, have argued that global fertility will fall below replacement rates in the 2020s and that world population will peak below 9 billion by 2050 followed by a long decline. There are also Spanish researchers that are making the case that the world will in fact be less crowded in 2100 than it is now. Already the news media is starting to promote a greying population. An example is Japan’s population that is  in dire trouble with an ageing population and a low fertility rate. Japans population decline is forecast to drop from 128 million in 2010 to 86.74 million by 2060. In 1969 the world was growing at a rate of 2% annually. Today the rate is 1.1%, a decrease of almost 50%. Definitely headed in the right direction.

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau made a speech saying we should trust our science to make the right decisions for us regarding global warming. Unfortunately blindly following along without questioning the science will lead us down the same devastating path as the Global population scare of the 1970.

As John Maynard Keynes said: “When the facts change, I change my mind”. Canadians should follow that advise.

  • is projected to reach 8 billion by 2024
  • has doubled in 40 years from 1959 (3 billion) to 1999 (6 billion)
  • is currently growing at a rate of around 1.14 % per year
  • growth rate reached its peak in the late 1960s, when it was at 2%
  • growth rate is currently declining and is projected to continue to decline in the coming years

  • world population will nearly stabilize at just above 10 billion persons after 2062
  • a tremendous change occurred with the industrial revolution: whereas it had taken all of human history up to the year 1800 for world population to reach 1 billion, the second billion was achieved in only 130 years (1930), the third billion in less than 30 years (1959), the fourth billion in 15 years (1974), the fifth billion in 13 years (1987), the sixth billion in 12 years (1999) and the seventh billion in 12 years (2011).
