Oil Sands Hypocrisy

with one comment

orinoco 01Utah has¬†little problem with their oil sands, yet¬†Alberta’s oil sands and the Key Stone Pipeline is trashed around the world as an environmental nightmare. Why the hypocrisy? This is a question that no one seems to want to tackle and give an answer. Oil sands are the same around the world. You can’t have¬†good and bad oil sand. So why is the world just picking on the¬†Alberta oil sands? The argument of being an environmental catastrophe just doesn’t wash.¬†¬†Since other oil sands around the world are not being attacked by the same environmental groups with the same gusto as¬†attacking Alberta, how can it possibly be an environmental motive that drives the push to shut down the Alberta Oil Sands. ¬†Just the idea of an environmentalist having two different views on oil sands depending on the country is ludicrous. ¬†It can’t be. The drive to shut down the Alberta Oil Sands must have another motive.

Venezuela is now producing more extra heavy crude in the Orinoco oil sands than its four upgraders can handle. The upgraders have a combined capacity of 630,000¬†bbl/d . There is¬†approximately 300 bn bbl of bitumen estimated to be recoverable (largest recoverable deposit on earth) compared to Alberta’s 168 bn bbl.¬†¬†The mostly¬†in-situ operations, as in Alberta (80%),¬†in Venezuela¬† are massive and very carbon intensive projects, so where is the protest to shut down Orinoco. Where is¬†the outrage and the news coverage. The largest oil sands deposit on earth being mined with little to no CO2 emissions regulations and¬†hardly a word.

The USA also has its oil sands production going on in the¬† Uinta Basin¬†in Utah. Although the Utah’s Uinta Basin bitumen deposits contain 90% less sulfur than the bitumen found in Alberta’s Athabasca region and Venezuela which averages about 5%, it is still Oil sands and comes with all the environmental problems all oil sands come with. Again, little opposition for the Utah product to be shipped by pipe through the USA. Not a word from the Obama administration.

An Italian oil company¬†ENI announced a project to develop a small oil sands deposit estimated between 500 million and 2.5 billion barrels reserves of recoverable oil sands ¬†in the Republic of Congo. Production is scheduled to commence in 2014. Small potatoes compared to Venezuela and Alberta but still oil sands.¬† Again very little criticism from our world environmentalists¬†even though it could¬†¬†destroy the Congo’s rainforest.

We could¬†go on with examples around the world from Russian oil sands to ¬†Kazakhstan, bottom line, Alberta is the only¬†oil sand producing country that is getting the shaft from the environmental community. Why does¬†so many factions¬†want Alberta Oil Sands and the Keystone pipeline¬†shut down or reduced to limited production. The answer has little to do with the environment and much more as to who is going to get the oil business and make the money. Venezuela¬†is going to be a big winner with the Alberta oil sands stalled. With its business dwindling to the US and oil accounting for 90% of its export business¬†, Venezuela has sold China¬†on their oil sands¬†resulting in China¬†dramatically altering its international investment policy, pulling back on its plans for direct participation in Canada‚Äôs oil sands. With Alberta Oil sands land locked its businesses as usual for the other oil-producing countries, the environment and CO2 emission’s be dammed.

As¬†David Hannum once said “there’s a sucker Born every minute”. Guess they all ended up in Canada since we’re the biggest dupe’s and losers in the oil sands environmental game. We coulda , woulda been a world-class¬†oil-producing nation if only we had known what game we were playing.

Calgary City Hall Alderman Exposed by CTAG

Calgary City Council on Banning Shark Fish on the prarries

Calgary City Council on Banning Shark Fish on the prairies

Yesterday¬†I had the pleasure of attending an information session at the Chinese Culture Center in Calgary¬† hosted by¬†CTAG (Coalition For Transparent and Accountable Governance) to hear the pros and cons of having a shark fin ban in Calgary. I was surprised to see the auditorium¬†full of concerned Calgarians wondering why the City Council did not ¬†consult them prior to the first reading and passage of the bill last month. The message that really stood out from the crowd was not only did the¬†two City Alderman, John Mar and Brian Pincott,¬†not seem to know any facts about shark fishing they really didn’t seem to understand that they cannot use bully tactic and tax payer’s money to pursue¬†an agenda that has little or no bearing¬†on city issues which¬†they were elected for. The few facts that Alderman Pincott threw¬†our were so extremely skewed ,¬†that when confronted ¬†were indefensible. When Pincott said that over 70 million sharks were killed each year¬†, there was no mention on how many are fished for food or fished just for the shark fin. Also in the scientific study that was quoted back to him, the scientific¬†community really¬†doesn’t¬†know how many sharks are fished each year, they can only¬†estimate¬†between 26 million to 70 million. It’s clear that¬†Mr Pincott is only quoting the highest numbers to benefit¬†his own agenda and¬†not¬† giving the public the real balanced¬†facts¬†so they can¬†understand the issue¬†.

Its was very disturbing hearing politicians like Alderman Mar and  Pincott trying to defend their position with innuendo and rhetoric. Not only did they not have any real facts on why they want to have Calgary ban shark fishing, but they had no idea on the cost to the taxpayer to police the ban. Alderman Pincott just ignored this important question by saying it will be looked into later. Completely irresponsible and ill thought out.

Mar and Pincott also seem to ignore¬†the legal sustainable shark fishing industry¬†in BC supported by the¬†Suzuki Foundation. There is nothing wrong with fishing any sustainable seafood whether¬†it be the spotted shrimp or shark. It’s a¬†mystery as to why these two Alderman think they¬†know more than the Suzuki Foundation on this issue and are dragging Calgary taxpayers into an expensive ban¬†while the¬†federal government has already banned¬†shark finning in 1996 plus the Ontario court¬† just yesterday overturned the Toronto shark finning bylaw.¬†

By far the most disturbing comment  by Alderman Pincott was when he blamed the federal government for not doing enough to protect the shark. This remark suggests they have other motives for getting involved in a federal jurisdiction. Do they really care about the shark or is this just a ruse to develop an issue , again on our tax dollars, to slam the Federal Conservative government. The motives for this ban have clearly become very suspicious.

Lucky for the taxpayer, over the next few weeks there will be more information sessions to expose this ridiculous ban and attack on our personal freedom to choose what legal food we like to eat. There has already been close to 6000 signature on a petition to stop this ban in just a few weeks. Now that the citizens of Calgary realize how they are being bullied and their right to choose legal products is being strip by these Alderman without properly being consulted,  we will most likely see these Alderman running for the door blaming each other for this stupid and very dubious bylaw.

The Calgary City Hall Sharks

with 2 comments

Dogfish Shark is Certified Sustainable by Moody Marine Ltd (Independent Scientific Association)

On Monday Calgary City Council passed¬†first reading of a¬†new bylaw aimed at banning the sale of shark fins and shark products in Calgary¬†even though there is a commercial shark fishing industry¬†in Canada on the Pacific and Atlantic coast that fishes sustainable shark fish (the dog-fish¬†shark) . The council argues it is against¬†the finning of sharks (cutting off the fin and throwing away the fish)¬†so this practice should be banned. The problem with this argument is that the practice of finning¬†is already banned in Canada since the early 1990’s.

There are several alderman that¬†appear to be¬†the driving force¬†of this bogus and unthought out bylaw. These Alderman¬†don’t¬†seem to have¬†all the facts about¬†the shark industry or even care to¬†acknowledge¬†the facts¬†, yet push ahead a bylaw that will ban legal¬†shark product from Calgary residents. I find this¬†a disgraceful abuse of power by these Alderman dictating what legal food products Calgarians can¬†or¬†cannot eat. It’s like they are promoting¬†their own personal environmental¬†issue , for some unknown reason,¬†on taxpayers money.

I understand it was mentioned that some alderman¬†googled the web and couldn’t¬†find a thing on the shark fishing industry. Just didn’t¬†exist. Said¬†it was all a fabrication of the pro shark activists. Said there is no sustainable shark fishing industry in Canada.¬†Well, just to set the record straight,¬†here is a little information¬†on the sustainable¬†shark industry they can consider before the final reading of the bylaw this coming January 2013. It might be a good idea for the aldermen¬†do to a little home¬†work¬†on the subject before¬†they start backing a ridiculous bylaw with outrages fines of up to $10,000 for being in possession of legal¬†shark fish products.

The¬†legal commercial shark¬†fisheries¬†is aimed at the porbeagle shark and spiny dogfish and was entered into assessment by the BC Dogfish Hook & line industry Association that represents more than 90% of the vessels fishing Dog fish Shark and all Processors that convert the fish into market ready. The BC coast wide¬†total allowable catch¬†for Dogfish is 14,000 metric tonnes, with 9,250 m.t being accessible to the Hook and Line sector and 4,480 m.t. by the trawl sector.¬†The MSC’s dogfish certification is supported by the David Suzuki Foundation¬†(DSF)¬† and the¬†World Wildlife Fund. The fishery is managed within the precautionary framework of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). All parts of the shark fish including the fin are sold, just like any other fishing product.

I hope we don’t¬†hear again from the Calgary¬†Alderman that there is no shark fishing industry¬†in Canada. There is. And its legal. I also hope they¬†ask themself before the final vote on January 2013, how¬†they can possible¬†support banning Calgarians¬†from a¬†legal fish product.¬†Their job as Alderman is to give¬†the voters¬†the facts not half-truths and fiction. ¬†I find it preposterous and a dangerous precedent for banning other legal food products.

Something’s Fishy At Calgary City Hall?

leave a comment »

So whats going on in the Calgary city hall these days? I heard through the grape-vine¬†the environmental¬†socialist have taken over. Yes that right. The city council, all but a few have decide to ban shark fin soup. No kidding, ban a bowl of soup. As if this is the most important thing they have to do.¬†City Hall¬†has decided that the shark¬†population is¬†in great decline the world over and they have to step up and save the shark. It all sound like a great¬†idea at first glance until you learn that the great Canadian David¬†Suzuki¬†is in favor of the BC shark fishing industry on sustainable shark fishing. So why is the City council so head strong on COMPLETELY¬†banning a legal BC INDUSTRY when the greatest Canadian environmentalist in Canada favors the industry? I guess the bottom line is what gives the Calgary City council the right to dictate what legal products we as Calgarians can eat?¬†I agree that fishing sharks just for their fins is completely absurd, but in a controlled legal industry where the whole fish is used (as in BC)¬†there is no reason for the city council to run rough shot over the public and dictate what they can or cannot eat. This is completely abusing and misusing their power as alderman. The way the council is thinking, they¬†can virtually ban what ever they wish¬†.¬†This is pure¬†rubbish. The¬†voters didn’t vote them in for this abuse.

I’m also hearing through the grape-vine there is starting to be a huge backlash that could last right on into¬†the next election if this is not resolved. Thousands of signature have already been gathered in just a few weeks on a petition to stop this foolishness of city council¬†dictating what Calgarians can eat. The idea that city councilors can use their power to promote their pet environmental projects on the taxpayers back is stirring up a hornets nest that’s going to sting badly in the next election.

Getting back to the bowl of shark fin soup that the council wants to put a complete ban on, one has to wonder if they really did any research on the subject. You don’t¬†have to go to far to find that the federal government has already banned shark fining (cutting the fin of the shark and throwing the rest away) back in the 1990’s. You also don’t¬†have to google too much to find that Canada has a legal shark fishing industry that is regulated and fishing sustainable shark fish. The shark fins¬†are part of the fish that is sold legally.¬†So what reason would city council have to run down and ban a legal Canadian industry? The only reason I can think of is they just don’t¬†know all the facts.

I’m all for protecting the environment and our wildlife, but what the Calgary city council is doing cannot be tolerated, that’s telling us what we can eat.¬†As I mentioned before the voters of Calgary expect the alderman to work on matters that concern the city and spend our tax dollars wisely. They don’t expect them to put endless hour and tax dollars¬†on their pet¬†environmental projects. We have a federal government to look after the fishing industry. Enough of this socialist dogma.

Canada’s Socialist Bandwagon

leave a comment »

Canada under the NDP

In Canada,¬†a country that prides itself on freedom and the enterprising spirit, its amazing to watch the socialist left¬†movement gain so much steam in Canada. Truckloads of leftist spewing their venomous condemnation at Steven Harper and the Conservatives. All but a few news media shouting for¬†¬†PM Harper’s head. So, whats this all about? Why is there such a hatred for the Conservative from the Socialist left? Many of the reasons seem to be to¬†push their own special interests¬†and promote their ideology. Unless you’re a member in these special interest groups there’s really¬†not much in it for you, the ordinary folk.

Since the Unions¬†are loosing members and the government is looking at new rules to allow members to opt out of the union , unions¬†are facing a massive loss of¬†¬†revenue¬†with reduced union dues being paid.¬†This is money they use to promote their own agendas¬†and donate to friendly¬†political parties that share their views. ¬†With their massive amounts of money collected from union dues, they have the means and power to change laws that benefit their special interest. It’s a¬†fight for power and money. The unions have a lot to lose. For years the pendulum has been swinging left to a point¬†where the governments and business can no longer afford their huge¬†benefit¬†and wage packages and still compete with other world countries. Its come to a point either we compete or end up like Greece and other European¬†countries. The thought of joining¬†the great european socialist dream with¬†all its perks¬†is dead and the Canadian unions are just starting to feel the pain. Socialism has¬†failed in Europe.

Like the Unions , environmentalism is big business. For years they have had the luxury¬†that few of us little folk¬†have, a¬†tax-free¬†environment for collecting donations since¬†most are considered charities. Even though it is well know they support political parties and promote their special projects, protesting governments and corporations they have been privy to the same status as a charity. This has now¬†been recognized and the rules are changing resulting in a lot less dollars in the environmentalist pocket. Bad news for the likes of Green Peace, a $200 million dollar a year business that collects millions from Canada and the Suzuki foundation. They are going to have to work a lot harder to get the same net income. They can no longer fleece¬†the taxpayers for their¬†special interest. The Conservative¬†government¬†is¬†the environmental¬†enemy. They watch the purse strings and affect the envious’¬†bottom line

The¬†left ideology¬†clearly views business as¬†the enemy. They feel that business should pay a¬†lot more than they are now¬†for social program. The people first the shareholders and risk takers¬†second. As noble as this may sound it just doesn’t work. But the battle for who controls the wealth is raging. As we have seen in Greece, the corporations have¬†been so overly taxed they can no longer function and compete in the world markets. They have been picked clean by its government always wanting more to promote their lavish promises to the¬†voters who just couldn’t¬†get enough free benefits. The parties over for Greece and is fast¬†coming to a close in Canada if we move back to the left and let them continue their spendthrift ways to control the public.

I expect all the left will be out in force in the next 2015 Federal election to regain their (our) money and power. The election will be an important turning point in the direction of Canada for a long time come. Our choice will be, a socialist NDP/Liberal government elite controlling us and our wealth or a traditional Conservative Canadian government and the freedoms that go with it.

The Socialist are Coming! So Who Cares!

George Washington – First President of the USA

With a new poll out today in Canada by Ipsos¬†Reid putting the NDP socialist in top spot ahead of the Conservatives and the Liberals, it’s looking like George Washington’s thoughts that political parties would¬† tear the country apart is right. He said when he left office that political parties would¬† be the downfall of¬†his (USA)¬†country. His words are now ringing true for Canada with a battle shaping up that will pit province against province.¬†NDP’s Mulcair has already started the battle with is anti oil sands stance against Alberta. And with this battle just beginning, crazy as it may seem,¬†the big topic in Alberta is the drinking consumption is being reduced to .05% from .08%.¬† Who cares if the crazy socialist from Quebec take power in Canada just as long as they can have a drink after work and drive home. Maybe Albertans have just got to fat and complacent to see their future.

Another quote from George that use to personify what Albertan’s were all about is,

A people… who are possessed of the spirit of commerce, who see and who will pursue their advantages may achieve almost anything“.

This quote doesn’t apply now.The majorlty of Albertans as other parts of Canada have drifted away from taking care of themselves and have latched onto the government to solve all their problems flocking to the political party that will give them the most, which brings me to another of Georges quotes:

“”However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.

I hope that Albertans that value their freedoms start to put the same emphasize on preserving it as they do about driving over .05% after they have had a glass of alcoholic beverage. The way their allowing the social state to advance, alcohol will be banned altogether, so who cares about the .05% law..

Government Debt – The Next Generation Pays

leave a comment »

Someday this will be all yours

Someday this will all be yours

When looking at¬†the way Canada subsidizes its budget¬†deficit¬†and debt to pay for all the goodies we can’t afford, it¬†sure looks¬†like a¬†skeptical scheme to me. It appears they¬†take our savings to finance¬†our budget debt, then pay us¬†interest from¬†the taxes they collect from us¬†.¬†It’s not done¬†quite that straight forward, but in a roundabout way we never question.

Most just look at the national debt as a part of the system. Its¬† always been with us and always will. So who cares. Well , the next generation taxpayers better care¬†because the higher the debt the more interest it cost to service¬†, and¬†it doesn’t¬†take a Liberal professor or¬†NDP’s Mulcair¬†to figure out¬†where that money is coming from. Presently the net debt is around $580 billion and growing with interest to service the¬†debt of $35 billion annually or $16,500 per person. A¬†dismal¬†start for the next generation considering they also have to pay the provincial debts left to them, especially in Ontario.

The majority of Canada’s¬†debt (80%-85 %¬†) is owned by Canadians¬†through pension funds, Canadian¬†banks saving accounts etc. , mutual funds and provincial governments. These entities use their funds (that are given to them by you) to buy up government debt. In return these entities get¬†safety for their investment and a return on the investment paid¬† by the Canadian government, you, the taxpayer. In other words¬†the government borrows money from you through mutual funds etc then pays interest to the fund with tax dollars. The higher the debt grows, the more they borrow,¬†the more tax dollars they need to pay. A seemly never-ending cycle that will eventually come to an end. Like a Pyramid scheme there is no way the government can pay back the debt holders unless each Canadian chips¬†in $16,500, their share of the debt¬†. Fat chance of that, so, around and around we go. As long as the free benefit goodies keep coming , who cares.

Note: It is interesting to note that the government deficit forecast for 2012 is around $25 billion and the amount of interest paid on the debt is $35 billion.

NDP surging in polls. 99% want a bigger piece of the pie

As I mentioned in the beginning , it just seems little deceiving. The more debt the government piles up on our behalf, the more they borrow from us to finance it, using some of that cash to pay us interest. If the government is ever going to get of this merry-go-round it has to start paying off the debt by growing the economy. As citizens we have to get behind government efforts and stop throwing road blocks up like were doing to the Oil Sands developement, a resource that could bring billions into the Canadian economy, and stop demanding unrealistic benefits. if we are to prosper and leave a future for the next generation, who incidentally may be voting in the 2015 election for a social left government like the NDP if their prospects look dim with a mountain of debt to pay, we had better start to take our national debt seriously.

Is It To Late? Is The Battle Lost For Fiscal Responsibility?

leave a comment »

The benefit train left the station years  ago and is now picking up a real head of steam. Not only do the generations of today want great jobs and benefit packages, they are demanding it whether they earn it or not. The problem is they are no longer affordable. With never-ending increases in costs and benefit expenses , companies can no longer compete and the dwindling number of taxpayers can no longer subsidize them. In Alberta the top 50% of the earners pay 97% of the personal tax bill while over 40% of their wage is already taken towards taxes and fees. Yet, Albertans are crying out for more money for health care and education when 65% of the provincial budget  already goes to these 2 items.

Even though Greece has already gone down the path of social spending and has ended up in ruins ,¬†The majority of Canadians¬†can’t understand they are on the same path. 60% of Canadians vote for a left leaning social party rather than a fiscal Conservative¬†party.¬†they are hooked on¬†free¬†social programs. But like Greece Canada is¬†in debt by over¬†one trillion¬†dollars and climbing. We are borrowing money for these so-called free programs with no real plan to pay down the debt. We borrow in the good times and borrow even more in the bad. The Canadian Government debt for 2012-2013 is projected to balloon to $605 billion. The gravy train is on a roll.

A Greece election is now scheduled to be held on 17 June 2012 after a coalition government was unable to be formed following the May election. After¬†increasing taxes and cuts to benefits¬†,Greeks¬†turned to the streets with violet demonstrations. They just can’t understand they are broke and are poised to vote in a new government to start the spending. They actually think that Germany¬†will bail them out indefinitely. Completely delusional thinking but after decades of lavish benefits¬†they feel entitled and want someone to pay for them. If any government¬†tries to stop the entitlement train they will voted them out.

We are now seeing signs of this Greek style entitlement in Canada. With rioting students in Quebec and a dysfunctional Liberal government voted back in, in Ontario, Canadian voters are showing signs of tossing good fiscal management for never-ending free social benefits that the NDP offer. Our governments are caving in from the federal to the municipal. No politician would now dare go against the tidal wave of social entitlement and hope to get voted in.

I would think the next federal election will be the turning point. Do Canadians go Left and continue piling on social benefits and debt, pillaging the last remaining dollars of the top 50% earners and corporations to subsidize their follies like many of todays European countries or stay with a center right conservative government and continue the battle to create prosperity through education, hard work and paying down our debt .  Looking at Ontario and Quebec it might be too late for the fiscal right and Canada. We can only continue to educate the entitled thinkers and point them to the European disasters that await them if they vote in an NDP or Liberal government, and hope they wake up.

Poll – Is Alberta’s Personal Tax System Fair?

The top 50% of the earners in Alberta are paying¬†97% of the¬†personal tax bill contrary to what many believe. The federal government stats are also similar¬†to Alberta’s. As the Alberta government’s budget keeps growing with 65% of its budget going to just two items, health care and education ,and the average Canadian already paying over 40% of their wage to taxes and fees there is becoming fewer taxpayers to foot the bill. What do you think? Cast your vote and leave a comment.

Is Canada being Greekinized?

leave a comment »

Looking at all the troubles in Greece today its hard not to look at how they got into their financial woes and if we are not following the same path. Todays working and retired Greeks have spent all their money, robbing the futures of the young. Wallowing in lavish early retirement benefits free health care and education for years, they have left over 50% of the youth unemployed with nothing. no future no hope. with their economy in a shambles. Are we Canadians going down the same path doing the same to our youth and economy?

Its become clear¬†looking at¬†the bigger Canadian provinces¬†the entitled group is becoming the majority. With the Liberals being voted back¬† in¬†Ontario even with its dismal¬†track record and riots in Quebec, the public doesn’t¬†want to give up any benefits¬†regardless¬†if they can afford¬†them or not. The left leaning socialist politicians just keep blaming¬†Western Canada for all their problems and ¬†promise more each election.¬† Now the public feels its their right for free daycare, healthcare, education and retirement benefits just to mention a few, just like Greece.

Greece has already run into the problem of not being able to tax the earners any more. Presently an earner making between $15,000 and $40,000 has approximately 55-60% deducted from their paycheck in taxes/fees and pension deductions. The top income tax rate is 45% plus social security payments of 16%, property taxes, an average VAT of 12% plus any additional municipal and government fees. Hardly worth working. And then there is Canada with an average total tax and fee rate of over 40% and creeping upward. And remember the 40% is a Canadian average. the bigger provinces are already Greekinized, inching their way to 50%.

It’s also¬†interesting¬†to note that the Provincial Health Care is higher than Greece¬†social services and health care combined. Most provinces pay over 40% of their budget¬†for health care , Greece pays¬†only 32%.¬†¬†looks ¬†like we aspire to¬†entitlement using¬†Greece and Europe as our role models.

And then there’s the debt. As we now know Greece is broke and looking for handouts since it cannot borrow any more funds to keep it afloat. Lucky for¬†Canada that we can still borrow since we are over one trillion in debt between the provinces¬†and the federal government. So much for our free entitlements. Were using other people’s money to¬†support¬†our lavish entitlements ¬†just like Greece did.

With the ever-increasing tax burden falling on the top 50% of ¬†tax earners, especially the top 10%. Canada , like Greece cannot continue raising taxes and living on borrowed money. The idea¬†to make the corporations pay didn’t¬†work for Greece either.¬†When Greece raised the expenditures of corporations they became less competitive and started producing less.

The parties over for Greece. Now they have to go home and sober up just like Albertans and Canadians¬†will have to do in¬†a decade or so if we don’t stop our foolish spending and rid ourselves of this entitlement mentality. and vote in governments that will take real leadership and build on what we have and not on what we can borrow.
